OKAY Escapist Expo deserves a special dw/lj post just for it because I have so many thoughts and it's easier to pour them out here than all disjointedly on my plurk.
Okay, last night I went to a D&D session for video game class (WHICH WAS AWESOME) and Rob, who was originally going to give me a ride to the Expo, was like "I'm volunteering so I have to leave at 7 a.m. and you'll just be stuck in Durham with nothing to do for a few hours" and I was like N O P E. LMAO Wendi, my video game class prof, overheard us and was all like "I'd give you a ride if I weren't going with a friend in a two-seater 8(" it was so sweet. She is seriously the best person and I love her.
BUT ANYWAY. Luckily, one of my friends from the Technician was going (and we'd fangirled over it earlier in the week), so I talked to him and hitched a ride with him and his roommate instead. At a reasonable time of morning. Even though he made me meet him on centennial campus -- which is far off and separate from main campus and hence I was scared of getting lost there. 8( BUT IT WAS ALL OKAY. And then we went to Durham.
And in the line to get passes, the most amazing thing happened to me. A little backstory -- Susan Arendt, the managing editor for The Escapist, came and talked with my class about the industry in general a few weeks ago. Rob and I stayed back after class and talked with her and Wendi for awhile, and I'd expressed interest in maybe doing copyedit work there after I graduate. Well, as I was going to pick up my pass, she saw me, recognized me, and was all like OMG YOU MADE IT!! and was so happy to see me there. :'D and then she said really loud at the tables "MAKE SURE SHE GETS A VIP PASS." And that was … how I got a VIP pass instead of the normal one I actually purchased. I was like awkwardly flailing because WTF THAT IS SO NICE WHO DOES THAT?!?!?! and omg she remembered me :'(
And theeeen Zac and Matt (his roommate) and I did some shit. We went to the panel about worldbuilding, which I found really interesting as both a writer and an RPer because I felt like there was a lot of it that was RP relevant and not just like … tabletop RP relevant lmfao. But yeah that was pretty cool. Then we hit the dealer's room (or "expo floor", whatever), looked at some cool shit, bought some cool shit, then played old school arcade games. Since we were given free Magic: The Gathering starter decks, we went to a ~learn to play Magic~ table. It was okay but I have like … no attention span for that shit lmfao and being at a con where so much other cool stuff was going on didn't help.
Anyway, at the Magic table, we talked to this other guy who drove from SC to come to the con named TJ, and he ended up wanting to attend the same panel I did. Zac and Matt wanted to keep playing Magic, so we split up. TJ was okay, and it was nice to have someone to chill in line with I guess. The panel was about sequels and why everyone is so obsessed with making them instead of doing shit that's more original, and I really enjoyed it. And let's be real I really attended it for Yahtzee. (Zero Punctuation Yahtzee. Check it out. He's amazing. I'm kind of obsessed with him ngl.) After the panel, people went up toward where all the speakers were to get them to sign things. I got Yahtzee to sign my program, but all I had was a pen and it was … not cooperating with the paper and we were just like "yeah ….." (he's so quiet and slightly socially awkward irl I love him.) but then people had autograph paper things for everyone at the panel and I got Yahtzee to sign that with much better results. After that, the people who work there were trying to clear the room for the next panel (I was sad they didn't allow room-camping like SDCC does bc I was attending the next one anyway >:C ) but as they were shooing everyone away, guess who showed up? Susan Arendt! And she saw me and pointed and was like "YOU!! You can stay and get whatever you want :)" and that was how I got a picture with Yahtzee in addition to him signing my shit. I'm just sad that TJ operated my camera and … sucked at it because the picture is blurry as hell. LMAO I'm really tempted to track Susan down tomorrow and be like "so can I just stalk Yahtzee forever .o." But I won't because I AM A GOOD PERSON. Sometimes.
But yeah after that was the Escapist Q&A panel which was really awesome and made me wish I did more than occasionally read articles there and watch Zero Punctuation. So … maybe I will … I was also relieved I was at the panel before that to stalk Yahtzee bc the line to do that after this one was insane.
That was the last panel of the day, so I went to regroup with Zac and Matt and they were … watching anime in the theater next door. And it was some really ridiculous shit. Followed by an equally ridiculous CGI movie loosely based on Dragon Age, which … would have been a lot easier to take seriously if the animation didn't remind me of the weird CGI shit these days like the Tinkerbell movie. We almost went to see Movie Bob do commentary on Flash Gordon, but the place where they were viewing it wasn't automatically findable, and we were all tired and kind of headachy (or at least I was, because I didn't think to bring my glasses so my eyes were tired of having to look at all the far away things) so we decided to go home.
But not before stealing a shit ton of Red Bull. Well, technically not stealing since it was free but LET ME TELL THIS STORY. At the badge pick-up place, they were giving out free 4-packs of Red Bull. (On a side-note, I was really pissed that when I was hastily shoved into the VIP line I DID NOT GET ANY RED BULL!!! As a VIP I deserved like 5 cases ok.) Matt was the only one of the three of us who ended up getting one since Zac had a system mishap in picking up his badge and had to go to a different line, too. But yeah there were just. Free energy drinks all over the fucking place. There were free giant Red Bulls (which I also did not get) and free Nos (which I did get.) But, as we were leaving the convention center to go to the parking lot, there was just … a ton of Red Bull abandoned outside the empty registration tent. Zac and I both grabbed a 4-pack and were satisfied, but Matt decided that wasn't enough. He went back and grabbed the rest. And the rest was SIX BOXES. We essentially had 60 dollars in Red Bull and our tickets were only like 24. It was almost like we were paid in Red Bull to go to the con … but yeah they split the six boxes with me in addition to the box I'd already grabbed and now I have enough Red Bull to last me the rest of my life (jk who are we kidding it's more like a week.)
AND NOW PICTURES. I didn't take very many bc I was busy doing things like … you know, living life.
( under the cut )
AND I GET TO DO IT ALL AGAIN TOMORROW. I feel like today was such a good day how can tomorrow even compare to this ...
